I am a duck - Duck Soup

American film. Made in 1933. Released in Japan the following year, 1934. A masterpiece by the Marx Brothers, known for their nonsensical exchanges of gags that break common sense, this is also the last film of the four brothers era, including the youngest brother Zeppo (1901-1979). Taking advantage of the chaos caused by the new leader Firefly (third brother Groucho, 1890-1977) of the financially struggling nation of Freedonia, the ambassador of a neighboring country plots to take over Freedonia. A pair of spies (eldest brother Chico, 1887-1961 and second brother Harpo, 1888-1964) are immediately sent in, but Firefly and the spies continue to make high-handed remarks and actions, and the two countries finally enter into war. The director is Leo McCarey, who was famous for many comedies from the silent era. The famous mirror gag that Harpo, disguised as Groucho, performs on the spot when he bumps into Groucho himself is said to be McCarey's idea. Although it was not a box office success, it is now highly regarded as a masterpiece that sharply satirizes the world situation shaken by the rise of fascism.

アメリカ映画。1933年作品。日本公開は翌1934年。常識を破壊するようなナンセンスなギャグの応酬で知られるマルクス兄弟の代表作で、末弟ゼッポZeppo（1901―1979）を含む4兄弟時代の最後の作品でもある。財政難のフリードニア国が新指導者ファイアフライ（三男グルーチョGroucho、1890―1977）を迎えた混乱に乗じて、隣国の大使はフリードニアの乗っ取りを企む。さっそく2人組のスパイ（長男チコChico、1887―1961と次男ハーポHarpo、1888―1964）が送り込まれるが、ファイアフライはスパイらといっしょになって傍若無人な言動を繰り返し、両国はついに戦争へと突入する。監督は無声期から多くの喜劇映画で鳴らしたレオ・マッケリー。グルーチョに変装したハーポがグルーチョ本人と鉢合わせをしてとっさに演じる鏡のギャグが有名だが、これはマッケリーのアイデアとされる。興行的には振るわなかったものの、ファシズムの台頭に揺れる世界情勢を痛烈に皮肉った傑作として現在では高い評価を受けている。
