A town in the Khorat Plateau in eastern Thailand. Capital of Ubon Ratchathani Province. 300 km east of Nakhon Ratchasima, overlooking the Moon River, a tributary of the Mekong. Named Ubon, meaning lotus, during the reign of King Rama I (1782-1809). Trade in rice, livestock, and tobacco is thriving. During the Vietnam War, it was the site of a US air base. Rice, freshwater fish, livestock, sugarcane, timber, and cotton are produced in the surrounding area. Many Lao and Khmer people live here. Ubon Ratchathani Station in nearby Warin Chamrap is the terminus of the railway line that runs east from Bangkok. Population: 106,552 (2003 estimate).
