An American daily newspaper. It was first published in 1847 as the Chicago Daily Tribune by John L. Scripps and others. In 1855, it grew rapidly into a major newspaper after J. Medill and others joined in management and editing. It supported the founding of the Republican Party and contributed to the election of President Lincoln, and became a newspaper of national interest during the Civil War. From 1910, it flourished under the management of J.M. Patterson and R.R. McCormick, also members of the Medill family, and for 20-30 years it was one of the newspapers with the highest circulation in America. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
