Year of death: January 20, 1732 (February 15, 1732) Year of birth: 7th July 8th Enpo (1679.8.14) A Confucian scholar from the mid-Edo period. His given name was Masayoshi, later Shinkyo, and the pen name Kyosai. Born in Kyoto, he became a disciple of Asami Keisai at around the age of 24. After 10 years of hard work, he is known as one of the three greatest disciples of Keisai. After Keisai's death, he lectured his students on Neo-Confucianism of the Saki school, but unlike his teacher, he also became deeply devoted to Shinto. He inherited Yamazaki Ansai's Suika Shinto, and based on the idea of the unity of Shinto and Confucianism, he emphasized the simultaneous study of Confucianism and Shinto. This can be said to be a form of Neo-Confucianism that was more Japanized. His works include Kyosai Sensei Zasawa Bunki, written by his senior disciple Yamaguchi Shunsui, and Daigaku Jo Kokyu, which explains Neo-Confucianism from the perspective of Shinto. <References> Ushio Hirotaka, Wakabayashi Kyosai (Series: Japanese Thinkers, Volume 13) (Atsushi Shibata) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
