Year fish - Nengyo

A general term for fish that have a short life span and, as a rule, die within one year after birth after spawning. Yearling fish are limited to certain species such as ayu, icefish, and smelt, and the term often refers to ayu in particular. Ayu are born in autumn and grow well as young ayu from spring to summer. They begin to mature at the end of summer, becoming sabi-ayu (rusty sweetfish) mainly from October to November, after spawning and then dying. In archaic terms, salmon were also thought to be born in the spring, spawn, and die in the same year, so the term was used to refer to salmon.

寿命が短く、原則として生後1年以内に産卵して死亡する魚の総称。年魚はアユ、シラウオ、ワカサギなど特定の種類に限られ、とくにアユをさすことが多い。アユは秋に生まれて、春から夏に若アユとしてよく成長する。夏の終わりから成熟を始めて、10～11月を中心にサビアユ（錆鮎）となって産卵したのち死亡する。また、サケは春に生まれてその年に産卵して死ぬと考えられていたことから、古語ではサケをさす。
