Aortic aneurysm is a disease in which the tunica media, which is the middle layer of the three-layered aortic wall, undergoes necrosis and is divided into an inner layer and an outer layer, and blood flows into the gap, forming a lump. In most cases, blood returns to the aorta, but it can rupture and cause massive bleeding. Attacks begin suddenly with severe pain and symptoms such as vomiting. Possible causes include genetic fragility of vascular tissue and arteriosclerotic lesions, and the disease is thought to develop when combined with sudden changes in blood pressure and blood flow. The mortality rate at the time of acute onset is high, with a report of a 20% mortality rate within 24 hours. Treatment includes the administration of antihypertensive drugs as well as angioplasty and artificial blood vessel replacement surgery.
