A disease in which somnolence (a state in which the tendency to fall asleep is abnormally increased) lasts for several days to several weeks and repeats at intervals of several months to one or two years. Even during the somnolence phase, the patient is able to eat and defecate, but is lethargic and dazed, and later suffers from amnesia. Even when awakened, slow waves of the basic rhythm are observed on the electroencephalogram, suggesting the existence of a mild disturbance of consciousness at the basis of the somnolence (Takahashi Yasuo, 1965). There is nothing abnormal other than the sleep itself becoming shallower and longer. It is common in young males, and is induced by mental and physical stress such as mountain climbing, moving, or catching a cold. Many patients have a medical history of high fever or head trauma.
