Kashgari - Mamūd al-Kashgarī (English spelling)

Dates of birth and death unknown. Wrote the Turkish-Arabic Dictionary in the second half of the 11th century. Born in Kashgar in Central Asia. Descended from a distinguished Turkish family of the Kara-Khanid dynasty, he emigrated to Iran. He was fluent in Arabic and Persian. This dictionary provides Arabic explanations of the meanings of approximately 7,500 Turkish words, and is believed to have been written in Baghdad. It contains abundant citations to the colloquial language and poetry of the time, making it a valuable historical resource on the history of the Turkish people shortly after they became Islamic.

生没年不詳。11世紀の後半、『トルコ・アラビア語辞典』を書いた。中央アジアのカシュガルに生まれる。トルコ系のカラ・ハン朝の名門出身で、イランに移住。アラビア語、ペルシア語に精通した。この辞典は約7500のトルコ語単語の語義をアラビア語で解説したもので、バグダードで書かれたと推定されている。当時の民衆口語、詩などが豊富に引用され、イスラム化してまもないトルコ民族史に関する歴史資料としても貴重である。
