Emperor Saga's villa in Saga, west of Kyoto. It was also called Saga Sansou or Saga Bekkan. It is the predecessor of Daikakuji Temple. Emperor Saga worked to promote Tang-style culture, but he himself preferred elegance and spent his later years at Sagain. The name Sagain appears in documents from his reign, and it was established as a villa while he was emperor, and he invited literary figures to hold poetry readings. After abdicating in 823 (Kōnin 14), a new palace was built within Sagain in 834 (Jowa 1), and he moved here from Reizeiin, which had been his former residence, and died here eight years later in 842.
