A Proto-Malay ethnic group living in central Borneo, practicing slash-and-burn agriculture, mainly upland rice. Estimated population: 40,000 (1975). Most of them live in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. They are culturally closely related to the neighboring Kayan people, and are sometimes grouped together as the Kayan-Kenya ethnic group, but they themselves clearly recognize their differences in language and customs. Like other ethnic groups in Borneo, they live in longhouses (long-house-style dwellings on stilts), but the Kenya people combine several longhouses together to form a settlement.
