A 376m-high mountain towering over the center of Etajima-cho, Aki-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture. Until the end of World War II, the Naval Academy was located on the southern foot of the mountain, and the facility is currently used as the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Officer Candidate School and the First Service School. The mountain is made of coarse-grained biotite granite, which is easily weathered, and its steep terrain makes it prone to collapse. In June 1978, a large-scale forest fire burned the entire mountain, and with the arrival of the rainy season, there were fears of a secondary disaster from mudslides. Restoration was rushed for both disaster prevention and landscape reasons, and environmental conservation has been much debated.
