The National Picture Gallery in London. Its origins date back to 1824, when the art collection of Russian-born banker JJ Angerstein was purchased by the state and exhibited in his mansion. The current building in Trafalgar Square was built between 1833 and 1837 to a design by W. Wilkins. Unlike many national art museums in other Western countries, it was not based on a royal collection, but rather on works that have been collected successively through the discerning eye and taste of successive directors since its founding, with the addition of private donations and bequests.
