A port city at the southern tip of Jordan. Located at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba, which connects to the Red Sea, it is the only port in Jordan that has access to the open sea. It is 3 km from the border with Israel, facing the Israeli port of Elat. The port of Ezion Geber, which was built in the time of King Solomon, is adjacent to the northwest, and in Roman times it was a military base called Aelana. The story of TE Lawrence's (Lawrence of Arabia) surprise attack and capture of the city during World War I is well known. It is connected to inland areas such as Amman by a highway. During World War II, the port was improved and developed by the British, and facilities for ocean-going ships were established in 1961. The port is in an important position as a gateway to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean for not only Jordan, but also Syria and Lebanon. There is also an airport. Population 46,090 (1990 estimate).
