A village in Tosa County, central Kochi Prefecture. Population 1,347 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Kagami River, the village borders Kochi City to the south and Nangoku City to the east. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, the village has a small amount of cultivated land in the Kagami River basin, which flows west through the center. In the past, the village produced charcoal, washi paper, and cocoons, but in recent years it has produced a lot of Japanese ginger, yuzu, bamboo shoots, and ginger. At the very top of the Kagami River on the eastern edge is the limestone cave Shobu-do, where Yayoi period artifacts have been excavated, along with the nearby Shohei Cave. 高知県中央部,土佐郡の村。人口1347(1995)。鏡川上流域に位置し,村の南縁は高知市,東縁は南国市に接する。四方を山に囲まれ,中央部を西流する鏡川の流域にわずかに耕地が開ける。かつては木炭,和紙,繭を産したが,近年はミョウガをはじめ,ユズ,たけのこ,ショウガなどの生産が多い。東端の鏡川最上流に鍾乳洞の菖蒲(しようぶ)洞があり,すぐ近くの初平(しよへい)ガ岩屋とともに弥生時代の遺物が出土した。北の土佐町との境にそびえる工石(くいし)山(1176m)にはシャクナゲの群落もある。
