The Soga Meeting - Soga no Taimen

Japanese: 曾我の対面 - そがのたいめん

In the Soga Kyogen (→ Sogamono), which is based on the Soga Monogatari, this refers to the scene in which the Soga brothers Juro and Goro first meet Kudo Suketsune, their father's enemy, at his mansion, or a variation of that scene. In Edo Kabuki, the performance of Soga Kyogen in early spring (New Year) became an annual event from around the Kyoho era, and the meeting scene was generally performed as the first climax of the performance. The general format was for Kudo to be performed as the head of a zato (a troupe leader), Juro as a gentle actor, and Goro as an aragoto actor, and there were certain rules regarding costumes, music, etc.

曾我物語を題材とした曾我狂言 (→曾我物 ) のなかで，曾我十郎・五郎兄弟が父親のかたき工藤祐経とその館で初めて出会う場面，またそれを変形させた場面のことをいう。江戸の歌舞伎では享保頃から初春 (正月) に曾我狂言を上演することが年中行事化し，対面の場はその1番目大詰に演じられることが原則となっていた。工藤は座頭，十郎は和事，五郎は荒事の役として上演されるのが一般的な型になっており，衣装，音楽などにも一定の決りがある。
