...The perception of the Saracens, full of hatred and contempt on the part of European Christians, was the fertile ground for the Crusades, but the defeat of the Crusaders and the resulting contact with Muslims introduced the superior Islamic culture and the image of Islamic knights, including Saladin (Salaad al-Din), to Europe. After the 15th century, when the Muslims of the Iberian Peninsula were expelled by the Reconquista (war of recovery of the country), the main enemy of European Christians became the Ottoman Turks, and the word Turkey replaced the word Saracens as a synonym for Muslims. As the number of travelers to the Arab region increased, the term Arab became more common, and it came to refer especially to the nomadic Bedouins.
