It is a branch of Christian practical theology, and together with ascetic theology, it constitutes a branch of spiritual theology. Ascetic theology regards concrete human actions as a means to reach God, the ultimate goal of life, as active human activity, while mystical theology considers them passively, that is, as the result of God's special activity in the individual. It emphasizes contemplation and preaches mystical unity therein. Because it is centered on so-called mystical experiences, it is difficult to conceptualize, and it mainly focuses on the interpretation and criticism of symbolic phenomena and expressions.
