...In the general elections of November 1963 and February 1964, the Centre Coalition (center-left party) won twice, and Geórgios Papandréou (1888-1968) formed a cabinet, but the government was weak and the political situation unstable. After Constantine II, who ascended to the throne after the death of Pavlos I, dismissed Prime Minister Papandreou (July 1965), social unrest increased rapidly, and in April 1967, Geórgios Papadópoulos (1919- ) and others succeeded in a coup d'état on the grounds that he was blocking the advance of the left wing, and a military dictatorship was established. In July of the same year, the king went into exile, the constitution and political party activities were suspended, and the parliament was dissolved. ...
