Goldenrod - Autumn goldenrod

A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). The stem is upright and about 80 cm tall, and the upper part branches into an inflorescence. The leaves at the base are spoon-shaped, but the stalks become shorter from the middle to the upper part, and the leaf blade changes from ovate to lanceolate. From August to October, the branched branches bear numerous flower heads that open. The flower heads consist of several ray florets and tubular flowers. The Japanese name is a reference to the beauty of the flowers, which are similar to those of the Crassulaceae family, and bloom in autumn. Another name, Awadachisou (foam grass), is a reference to the appearance of the clustered flowers, which resembles the bubbles that come out when making sake. It is widely distributed in Eurasia, but the East Asian species has almost no hairs on its fruit, and is considered a variant or subspecies. Another subspecies, Koganegiku (golden chrysanthemum), also known as Miyamaaki no kinosou, grows in the alpine zone. A naturalized plant of the same genus is Solidago altissima.

キク科（APG分類：キク科）の多年草。茎は直立して高さ80センチメートル前後、上部は分枝して花序となる。基部の葉はスプーン形であるが、中部から上部になるにつれ、柄が短くなり、葉身が卵形から披針(ひしん)形となる。8～10月、分枝した枝に多数の頭花をつけて開く。頭花は数個の舌状花と筒状花からなる。和名は、花の美しさをベンケイソウ科のキリンソウに例えたもので、秋に咲くことによる。別名アワダチソウ（泡立草）は花の集まったようすを、酒をつくるときに出る泡に例えたもの。ユーラシアに広く分布するが、東アジアのものは果実にほとんど毛がなく変種または亜種とされる。高山帯には別の亜種コガネギク（黄金菊）、一名ミヤマアキノキリンソウが生育する。同属の帰化植物にセイタカアワダチソウがある。
