This zoo is located at the northern end of Regent's Park in the Westminster district of London, England. It is one of the zoos with the largest number of animal species in the world, and has the largest library of any zoo. It is run by the Zoological Society of London. It opened in 1828, and was expanded in 1830 with Royal animals from Windsor Castle, and then with animals from the Tower of London. In 1849, the world's first reptile house was opened, and in 1853, the first public aquarium was opened. During World War II, the zoo was severely damaged, and animals were forced to be euthanized or evacuated, and edible fish were used to feed the citizens. In 1955, reconstruction work began, and a footbridge, elephant and rhinoceros houses, a walk-through aviary, and a veterinary hospital were built one after another within the decade. In 1967, a small mammal exhibition hall was completed, and in 1972, the Sobell Pavilion, an exhibition hall for apes and monkeys, was opened. The pavilion also houses the giant panda enclosure and an animal research centre. In 1994, the Summer Children's Zoo, established in 1938, was reopened. It houses several thousand animals on an area of 150,000 ^m2 , and has had remarkable success breeding species such as the Siberian elephant, pygmy hippopotamus, musk oxen, Chilean flamingo and polar bear. The famous giant panda ChiChi arrived from China in 1958. In 1931, the Zoological Society of London opened Whipsnade Zoo in Dunstable, Central Bedfordshire, as a suburban branch of the Zoological Society of London. Its vast area of 2.4 million ^m2 houses and breeds a large number of animals. The zoo is home to two major research organisations under the patronage of the Zoological Society of London: the Wellcome Institute of Comparative Physiology and the Nuffield Institute of Comparative Medicine.
