Eguchi - Eguchi

Japanese:
Eguchi - Eguchi
A key water traffic point located at the point where the Mikuni River (present-day Kanzaki River) branches off from the main Yodo River. It is currently located near Eguchi, at the eastern end of Higashiyodogawa Ward, Osaka City. In 785, a new river was dug between the Yodo River and the Mikuni River, and a waterway was built to connect them. Since then, the area has developed rapidly, becoming a key transportation point where the road from Heian-kyo to Sanyo and Saikaido and the road to Nankaido split. Especially from the mid-Heian period onwards, pilgrimages to Kishu Kumano and Koyasan, as well as Settsu Shitennoji Temple and Sumiyoshi Shrine (Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine) became popular, and as exchanges and transport of people and goods between manor lords such as aristocrats and powerful temples and shrines and local people and goods became frequent, the number of people staying overnight at Eguchi on the way there and back increased dramatically. Many courtesans gathered in Eguchi-shuku to cater to the guests traveling and staying overnight, and it prospered as a red-light district alongside Kanzaki and Kashima in Settsu. This is described in detail in Oe Masafusa's "Yujo-ki." Some courtesans became wives or concubines of aristocrats, and in the "Sonpi Bunmyaku" and "Kugyo Bunin," there are many courtesans whose mothers are described as courtesans. One particularly famous courtesan was the courtesan Myo, known for her poetic dialogues with Saigyo, and her poems are included in the "Shin Kokin Wakashu" and "Yamagashu." Myo was commonly known as Eguchi no Kimi, and it is said that after her poetic dialogues with Saigyo, she became inspired and built a hermitage (Eguchi Kimido), and the Nichiren sect temple Jakko-ji, which is said to be its successor, is located in Eguchi. → Post Stations and Inns → Related Articles Kawajiri | Naniwazu
