An ancient tribal state that held influence in South India along with the Chola and Pandya dynasties. Its base was in the Kerala region on the Malabar coast. In the rock-cut edicts of King Ashoka in the 3rd century BC, it is inscribed as Keralaputa along with the Chola and Pandya. Archaeological surveys of the ruins suggest that it was the driving force behind the megalithic culture of South India around the time of Christ. In addition, Sangam literature, which developed in the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, depicts tribal kingdoms and their conflicts. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
