Gyoku

Japanese:
Gyoku

[The Establishment and History of Kodo]
Regarding the establishment of the art of incense, there is a theory that since Oedari Yuho (Iwata Soho) around the Kyoho era (1716-36), it was founded by Sasaki Doyo, a Basara feudal lord of the Northern and Southern Courts (Dokushi Biyo), but although Doyo was an avid collector of fragrant woods, the incense he produced was combat incense, not incense art. All incense artists, regardless of school, look up to Sanjonishi Sanetaka (Gokku) as their founder. This is probably because Sanjonishi was regarded as an authority on incense at the Imperial Palace, having served as the head of the incense office for a number of years, and was also highly regarded in the capital and provincial capitals as a central scholar with connections to contemporary cultural figures such as Sogi, Botanka Shohaku, Soami, and Takeno Jōō.
