An old city on the left bank of the Kiso River in the northwestern tip of Aichi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. Its center is the Okoshi district, which developed as a post town and ferry crossing on the Mino Kaido road. Since the Edo period, it has been known for its cotton textiles, followed by silk textiles, and from the Meiji period onwards, wool textiles. It is now one of the centers of the Bisai textile industry. There are many small and medium-sized factories, and the main production is clothing fabrics, but in recent years the plastic industry has also moved in. It is on the Meitetsu Bisai Line. It is connected to Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture, by the Nobi Ohashi Bridge. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Kisogawa Town, Haguri County, and Ichinomiya City. 22.01 km2 . 愛知県北西端,木曾川左岸にある旧市。1955年市制。美濃街道の宿場,渡し場として発達した起(おこし)地区が中心。江戸時代から綿織物の産で知られ,次いで絹織物,明治以降は毛織物に転じて,現在は尾西織物工業地域の一中心をなす。中小規模の工場が多く,服地の生産が主であるが,近年はプラスチック工業も進出している。名鉄尾西線が通じる。岐阜県羽島市と濃尾大橋で連絡。2005年4月葉栗郡木曾川町と一宮市へ編入。22.01km2。5万8388人(2003)。
