In psychic research, this refers to a substance that is said to come out of the body of a medium and cause physical psychic phenomena. It was named by French physiologist Richet. German neurologist and psychologist Baron von Schrenck-Notzing (1862-1929) and French physician Gustave Geley (1865-1924) studied the French medium Eva C (1886-?). Ectoplasm is said to come out of the surface of a medium's body, especially from the mouth, nose, ears, and other body orifices, and appears in different concentrations such as mist, liquid, and solid. It is said to be the material for ghostly phenomena that occur in séances, and to be the support for the phenomenon of tables and chairs levitating in the air. However, its existence has not yet been confirmed in today's parapsychology.
