Crossed check - Senbikikogitte (English spelling) Crossed check

A check with two parallel lines drawn on the front of it is also called a crossed check. Checks are used as a means of payment, but the system of crossed checks was established to prevent the risk of a fraudulent holder receiving payment due to loss or theft. Chapter 5 of the Cheque Law (Law No. 57 of 1933) contains provisions regarding crossed checks. There are two types of crossed checks: general crossed and specific crossed. The former simply has two parallel lines drawn on the front of the check, or has the word "bank" or "BANK" written between them, and the paying financial institution cannot pay to any other financial institution than its own client or another financial institution. The latter has the name of a specific financial institution written between the two parallel lines, such as "Bank XX", and the check can only be paid to the designated financial institution, or if the paying financial institution itself is designated, it can only be paid to its own client. The person who can cross the check is the issuer or holder of the check. Once a line has been drawn, it is permissible to make the eligibility more restrictive, i.e., to change a general line to a specific line, but it is not permissible to make it more restrictive, i.e., to change a specific line to a general line. It is also not permissible to remove the line or to delete the name of the designated bank in the specific line.

In addition, if a paying bank receives a crossed check with the issuer's registered seal on the back and pays the presenter in cash, the paying bank can enter into a special agreement with the issuer to the effect that it will not be liable for damages caused by a violation of the crossing rule. This is called a special agreement between the parties to remove the crossing rule or to cancel the crossing rule.
