Dutch earwort - Dutch earwort

A biennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family (APG classification: Caryophyllaceae). The stem grows in a clump and is about 20 cm tall. The leaves are stalkless, opposite, elliptical, about 1.5 cm long, and covered with hairs on both sides. Many flowers are produced in cymes at the end of the stems from April to May. The five petals are about 5 mm long and white, with a shallow two-lobed tip. The fruit protrudes longer than the calyx and has 10 lobes at the end. A naturalized plant native to Europe, it has become a weed in fields and roadsides throughout Japan. It is yellowish green overall, hairy, and has shorter flower stalks than the sepals, so it is distinguished from the Japanese quince, which is also a weed. The Dutch quince was naturalized in Japan more recently, but it has spread to urban areas and is now more commonly seen than the Japanese quince.
