Lycée (English spelling)

Lycée (English spelling)
A secondary school in France that prepares students for the baccalauréat. Founded and maintained by the state in 1801, it was originally a seven-year program consisting of a four-year first term and a three-year second term, but after the Berthouin reforms, the first two years of the first term were made an observation period. Since 1963, the first term has been included in the secondary education colleges, and the second term, three years, is the only term that constitutes a lycée. Lycées offer courses in humanities, science, and industrial technology, and there are also technical lycées that focus on vocational education. In line with the objectives of French secondary education, all of them aim to develop critical thinking skills and develop character, rather than simply absorbing knowledge. The girls' lycée, founded in 1880, was originally a five-year program with a different curriculum from that of boys, but since 1942 it has been the same as that of boys. Most lycées are national, but there are a few public and private ones. Along with German gymnasiums, they were used as a model for Japanese secondary schools.
