1863‐1945 British Liberal politician. His father was a Welshman and a Unitarian school teacher who died in 1864. He was brought up by his uncle, a shoemaker and Baptist minister, and passed the bar exam in 1884. He opened a practice and gained fame for his non-conformist and Welsh nationalist stance. He entered the House of Commons in 1890, and during the South African War he became known as an eloquent fighter for the Liberal Party's radicals, fiercely attacking the imperialist policies of the then Colonial Minister J. Chamberlain. He joined the Campbell Bannaman cabinet in 1905 and as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Asquith cabinet in 1908. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
