Aeneis

Aeneis
Written in the later years of the ancient Roman poet Virgil. The title means "The Song of Aeneas," and it is a founding epic poem (12 volumes) of about 10,000 lines that tells the story of how Trojan prince Aeneas escapes his homeland, which has fallen to the Greek army, with his father Anchises and son Ascanius, and how, after a turbulent journey, he establishes a new state in Italy that will become the foundation of the Roman Empire. It was greatly influenced by Homer's "Odyssey" and "Iliad." The first half of the poem, volumes 1-6, which depict Aeneas's wanderings, his arrival in Carthage ruled by Queen Dido, and his descent into the underworld, are called the "Odyssean first half" because of the many common motifs, while the latter half, volumes 7-12, which depict the battles with the indigenous people after landing in Italy, are called the "Iliad second half."
