[Died] June 6, 1522. Bathory Benzel A leading German humanist, jurist, poet, and classical linguist. Great-uncle of P. Melanchthon. Well versed in classical languages, especially Greek, he lectured in classical Latin at the University of Basel. He later served Count Eberhard of Württemberg and traveled to Italy, where he became interested in Kabbalah and studied Hebrew. In 1506, he wrote De Redimentis Hebraicis (Introduction to Hebrew), which became a groundbreaking work in the study of the Old Testament back to its original source. He opposed the burning of Hebrew books by J. Pfefferkorn, a convert from Judaism, and clashed and argued with the Dominican monks of Cologne who supported Pfefferkorn, and eventually Reuchlin's books were condemned by the Pope. The Reformers sided with him, but he himself did not support Luther and tried to distance Melanchthon from Luther.
