Japanese: シャクナンガンピ(英語表記)Daphnimorpha kudoi (Makino) Nakai
Daphnimorpha kudoi (Makino) Nakai
A shrub of the Thymelaeaceae family that grows only in the highlands of Yakushima, it blooms with pale pink-purple flowers. It grows to a height of about 1.5m with few branches and noticeable traces of fallen leaves. The leaves are diamond-shaped, about 5cm long, and grow alternately at the ends of the branches. In early summer, a stalk several centimeters long emerges from the end of the current year's branch, the end of which divides into 3 or 4, each of which bears several to twenty or so flowers. The calyx is pale pink-purple, tubular, and opens into four lobes at the top. It has no petals, and the base of the ovary is surrounded by a disk with a glandular upper edge. It bears small, dry fruits in autumn.
