Three Dutch-born painter brothers, Pol, Herman, and Jehanequin, whose birth and death dates are unknown, were active as miniature painters in France between 1400 and 1416. They are the sons of sculptor Arnold van Rambourg, and nephews of J. Malheruelle, the court painter to the Duke of Burgundy, and are therefore sometimes called Malheruelle. They trained under a goldsmith in Paris, and in 1402 Pol and Jehanequin entered the service of Philip the Bold of Burgundy, and around 1411 all three became court painters to the Duke of Berry in Bourges. They painted pictures for gorgeous and refined illuminated manuscripts, such as the "Book of Hours Most Sumptuous of the Duke of Berry" (1413-16, unfinished, completed by J. Columbus in 1485, Musee Condé). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
