In general Kabuki plays, the goken wear a black cotton kimono and hood called "kurogoe" to avoid drawing attention, so the word "kurogoe" (or "kuronbo") is used as a colloquial name for the goken, but in dance, they perform with no makeup and wear black family crests and hakama, and in highly stylized plays such as "Kabuki Juhachiban," they perform in costume with a wig and hakama, called "kamishimo goken." It is customary for the goken to not be considered a character even when they are on stage, but if an actor is unable to perform, someone skilled enough to immediately take over will take over.
