The receiver system was developed in English law by the Court of Equity through case law. The name comes from the fact that the person administers the property and receives income (such as rent). Today, the system is widely used in common law countries, including the United States, and many receivers are prescribed by statute. There are various cases in which a person called a receiver is appointed, but in most cases they are appointed by the court as needed to administer property for a specific purpose.
