Russian poet. He is the greatest national poet of modern Russian literature and also the founder of the literary language. Born into an aristocratic family in Moscow (his maternal great-grandfather was Ethiopian), he studied at the Tsarskoye Selo academy near St. Petersburg. He showed poetic talent while still at school, and in his youth he sang of revolutionary aspirations in poems such as "Freedom" and "To Chadayev." As a result, he was exiled to southern Russia, and after the Decembrist uprising he was placed under the direct supervision of the emperor. He was embroiled in a scandal involving his wife and lost in a duel, but the circumstances are mysterious and it is said that a conspiracy by the emperor's side was involved. In addition to his beautiful lyric poems beloved by Russians, he also wrote many epic poems and prose works, including "Ruslan and Lyudmila" (1820). His representative works include "Eugene Onegin," "The Bronze Horseman" (1833), the dramatic poem "Boris Godunov" (1825), and the prose works "Belkine's Tales" (1830), "The Queen of Spades" (1834), and "The Captain's Daughter" (1836). He embodied the development of Russian literature during the period when it was moving from classicism to romanticism and then to realism. → Related topics Glinka | Koltsov | Dargomuizhsky | Tchaikovsky | Baratynsky | Belinsky | Boris Godunov | Mérimée | Lyubimov | Lermontov Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
