Also called Montoku Jitsuroku. A history book compiled by imperial decree. Ten volumes. One of the Six National Histories. A chronological record of the life of Emperor Montoku (reigned 850-858) from 850 (Kasho 3) to 858 (Ten'an 2). Fujiwara no Mototsune and others began compiling the book in 871 (Jogan 13) at the imperial decree of Emperor Seiwa (reigned 858-876), but it was temporarily halted. However, in 878 (Gangei 2), they resumed it at the imperial decree of Emperor Yozei (reigned 876-884), and completed it the following year. Compared to previous history books, this book contains more biographies of deaths. This is thought to have been a model for the present and future, based on the biographies of people who worked to reorganize the ancient nation during the period when the Ritsuryo system was disintegrating. Included in the "National History Series."
