The oldest kingdom that can be confirmed in the region, originating in northern Ethiopia. Its name can be seen in history from the 1st century. Founded by people who migrated from the Arabian Peninsula, it eventually expanded across the Red Sea to Yemen on the opposite shore. It prospered through trade with the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and various parts of the African interior, and had accepted Christianity by the time it destroyed the Kingdom of Kush in the 4th century. It gradually declined after being driven out of the Arabian Peninsula by the Sassanid Persian Empire in the 6th century. The ruins of its capital, Aksum, were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1980. →Related Articles Amhara | Eritrea Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
