The primary side of the transformer is a multiple n- turn coil, and the secondary side is a single turn. When commercial frequency current flows through the primary side, n times as much current flows through the secondary side, and the coil is heated by Joule heat. Applying this principle, there are two types of secondary side: a groove type, in which the iron core is wrapped in refractory material in a ring shape and metal material is placed inside and heated to melt, and a crucible type without an iron core. It is used to melt copper alloys and cast iron. In addition, no refractory coating is required for the heating treatment of coiled steel, and it can be heated easily and quickly, so applications in this area are increasing.

変圧器の一次側を多重 n巻きコイル，二次側を1回巻きとし，一次側に商用周波電流を流すと二次側に n倍の大電流が流れ，コイルはジュール熱で加熱される。この原理を応用して二次側を，鉄心を耐火材で環状に巻き，中に金属材料を装入して加熱溶解する溝型と，無鉄心のるつぼ型の2形式がある。銅合金，鋳鉄の溶解に用いられる。また，コイル状に巻いた鋼材の加熱処理には耐火材被覆などは不要で，簡便かつ急速に加熱できるので，その方面の応用が増している。
