Emil Artin

Emil Artin

A mathematician born in Vienna. One of the pioneers of "abstract mathematics" that emerged in the first half of the 20th century. His methods left a significant mark on the fields of number theory and topology. In number theory, he proved the "general law of reciprocity" and completed "class field theory" by Teiji Takagi. In topology, he created the "theory of knotting threads." He was a professor at the University of Hamburg from 1926, and in 1937, he was pursued by the Nazis and went to the United States, where he was a professor at Princeton University from 1946 to 1958. In 1958, he returned to Germany and taught at the University of Hamburg again. During this time, he participated in an international conference on algebraic number theory held in Tokyo and Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture in 1955 (Showa 30), where he reported on his research in number theory and gave a general lecture on knotting threads.
