Toyono [Village] - Toyono

Japanese: 豊野[村] - とよの

A village in Shimomashiki County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 5,254 (1995). Hilly mountains 150-350m above sea level are widely distributed, and there is a small alluvial lowland along the Hamato River, which flows north. It has been an open area since ancient times, and in the western hills are the ruins of Jousui-ji Temple, which existed between the Nara and early Heian periods, and four stone monuments bearing inscriptions of those times remain. Hibikigahara, the central plateau, is an old battlefield from the Sengoku period, and the road leading from here to Mifune Town still bears the name Satsuma Kaido. The main industry is agriculture, with rice and livestock farming, as well as the cultivation of tomatoes, prince melons, and other crops.

熊本県中央部，下益城（しもましき）郡の村。人口5254(1995)。標高150～350mの丘陵性山地が広く分布し，北流する浜戸川沿いに小規模な沖積低地がある。古くから開けた地で，西部丘陵地には奈良～平安初期に存在した浄水寺跡があり，当時の紀年銘をもつ四つの石碑が残存する。中央の台地響ヶ原は戦国時代の古戦場で，ここから御船町へ通じる道路には薩摩街道の名が残っている。主産業は農業で，米作，畜産のほかトマト，プリンスメロンなどの栽培が行われる。
