Sekkyobushi - A sermon

Japanese:
Sekkyobushi - A sermon
A type of storytelling art form performed from the end of the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Also known as sekkyo or utasekkyo. Buddhist sermons were popularized and then narrated in a musical style with a melody. It originated from the street performances in the Middle Ages where performers spoke from a bamboo stick, and from the performances performed at the door of a house, and in the Edo period, performances using shamisen accompaniment and marionettes also appeared. Before the Genroku period, it was more popular than Joruri, and some performers even performed puppet plays. Representative works such as "Karukaya" and "Sansho Dayu" are called the "Five Sekkyo."
