Miyabe Kingo

Botanist. Born in Edo. Graduated from Sapporo Agricultural College in 1881 (Meiji 14), he was appointed as a visiting official in the same year, and from 1884 was dispatched to Tokyo University as an assistant professor at Sapporo Agricultural College, where he studied botany and also engaged in research on plants in Hokkaido and the Kuril Islands. In 1886, he studied at Harvard University in the United States, where he studied algae science and mycology. Returning to Japan in 1889, he became a professor at his alma mater, and in 1909 (Meiji 42), he became a professor at the College of Agriculture of Tohoku Imperial University (now Hokkaido University).

He conducted extensive research on the flora of Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, and Karafuto (Sakhalin), and discovered a clear boundary of plant distribution in the Uruppu Strait in the Kuril Islands, which he later named the Miyabe Line (1932). He later switched to plant pathology and became a professor in charge of plant pathology. He was a member of the Imperial Academy (1930). In 1946 (Showa 21), he was awarded the Order of Culture.

植物学者。江戸に生まれる。1881年（明治14）札幌農学校を卒業、その年から開拓使御用掛として、1884年からは札幌農学校助教授として東京大学に派遣されて植物学を学び、かつ北海道、千島の植物の研究に従事した。1886年からアメリカのハーバード大学に留学して海藻学と菌学を学んだ。1889年帰国して母校の教授となり、1909年（明治42）東北帝国大学農科大学（現、北海道大学）教授となる。

　北海道、千島、樺太(からふと)（サハリン）の植物相の調査研究を広く行い、千島列島中の得撫(うるっぷ)海峡に植物分布の顕著な境界を発見、のちに宮部線と命名された（1932）。その後植物病理学に転じ植物病理学担当の教授となった。帝国学士院会員（1930）。1946年（昭和21）文化勲章を受章。
