Leo
(Leo)[1] III. Byzantine Emperor (reigned 717-741 ). Founded the Syrian dynasty (Isaurian dynasty), defeated the Arabian army twice in siege of Constantinople, and saved the empire from the threat of foreign enemies, but issued the iconoclasm, sparking the iconoclasm, which decisively led to the East-West division of the church and the division between the Eastern Roman Empire and Western Europe. Leo III. Died 741. [2] X. Pope (reigned 1513-21 ). Second son of Lorenzo de' Medici. Patron of the arts and sciences of the Renaissance. Issued indulgences to raise funds for the rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica, which drew criticism from Luther and caused the Protestant Reformation. ( 1475-1521 ) [3] XIII. Pope (reigned 1878-1903 ). He ended the Kulturkampf, encouraged the study of scholastic philosophy, issued many encyclicals, and made great efforts in enriching and developing the Church and in overseas missionary work. He also nurtured the Christian socialist movement and paved the way for the Church to respond to the 20th century, making him the most authoritative pope of modern times. ( 1810-1903 )

(Leo)[一] 三世。ビザンチン皇帝(在位七一七‐七四一)。シリア朝(イサウリア朝)を建て、前後二回アラビア軍のコンスタンチノープル包囲を撃破し、外敵の脅威から帝国を救ったが、偶像破壊令を出して聖像論争をひき起こし、教会の東西分裂、さらには東ローマ帝国と西欧との分裂を決定的にした。レオン三世。七四一年没。[二] 一〇世。ローマ教皇(在位一五一三‐二一)。ロレンツォ=デ=メディチの次男。ルネサンスの学芸の保護者。聖ピエトロ寺院再建資金調達のため免罪符を発行してルターの批判を招き、宗教改革の原因をつくった。(一四七五‐一五二一)[三] 一三世。ローマ教皇(在位一八七八‐一九〇三)。文化闘争を終結させ、スコラ哲学の研究を奨励し、多くの回勅を発して、教会の充実・発展、海外布教に力を尽くした。一方、キリスト教社会主義運動も育成し、教会の二〇世紀への対応の道を開き、近代において最も権威のあった教皇。(一八一〇‐一九〇三
