Ethiopian Church

The Christian church of the Republic of Ethiopia. Its doctrine is that of the Monophysite Church. Froumentios, who introduced Christianity to Ethiopia in the first half of the 4th century, was later ordained a bishop by Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria. After that, it became customary for Egyptian monks to become Abūna (head of the Ethiopian Church). After the Council of Chalcedon, it became Monophysite, but the exact circumstances of that time are unknown. From the 5th century, the Bible and liturgical books were translated into Ge'ez (a dialect in the north), and a unique Christian culture was formed.

エチオピア共和国のキリスト教会。教義の上からは単性論派に属する。4世紀前半エチオピアにキリスト教を伝えたフルメンティオスFroumentiosは，のちにアレクサンドリア主教アタナシオスによって主教に叙階された。以降，エジプトの修道士がアブーナAbūna(エチオピア教会の首長)に就任する慣行ができた。カルケドン公会議ののち単性論派に転じたが，その間の正確な事情は知られていない。5世紀より聖書や典礼書がゲーズ語(北部の方言)に翻訳され，独特のキリスト教文化が形成された。
