…A painter active in Suzhou, China, during the mid-Ming Dynasty. His pen name was Shizhou, and he was from Taicang, Jiangsu Province. He was skilled in landscapes, portraits, and birds and flowers, and is known as one of the four great Ming painters along with Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, and Tang Yin. He was the only professional painter among the four, but he also acquired literati culture through his interactions with Wen Zhengming and others. He first studied under Zhou Chen and learned his attitude of accepting tradition, and later copied many ancient paintings himself, firmly grasping the tradition and forming a family. His precise technique, supported by rigorous training, and his elegant color treatment, especially his frequent use of neutral colors, created a luxurious world of painting, reaching one of the pinnacles of Ming painting history, and had a major influence on the transformation of Wu school literati painting, which showed its colorist character after Wen Zhengming. …
