…After the Oregon region (1846) and the California region (1848) were officially incorporated into the United States, the need for a transcontinental railroad was called for, but its realization was delayed because the issue was caught up in the conflict between the North and the South over slavery. When the Civil War (1861-65) began, it was decided to build the Union Pacific Railroad from Omaha, Nebraska to the west, and the Central Pacific Railroad from Sacramento, California to the east. Since this region was still almost uninhabited and no profits could be expected from rail transport, Congress provided large amounts of land grants and cash aid. …
