[1][一] The name of the area in the southern part of the Kii Peninsula, facing the Kumano River basin and the Kumano Nada Sea. It straddles Mie and Wakayama prefectures, and corresponds to the former Muro District. It has been a place of miracles since ancient times, with many scenic spots such as the Kumano Sansha Shrine and Nachi Falls. *From the Kojiki (712): "At that time, Takakuranoshita of Kumano (the name of a person ) came to the place where the son of Amatsukami lay, carrying a sword, and offered it to him." It was known as a distribution center for timber, and lumbering, warm-climate horticulture, and fishing are thriving. Kumanoura, including the scenic spot of Onigajo, and Kitayama River, a tributary of the Kumano River, are part of Yoshino-Kumano National Park. Nachi black pine is a specialty of this area. [1][一] 紀伊半島の南部、熊野川流域と熊野灘に面する一帯の地域名。三重・和歌山両県にまたがり、旧牟婁(むろ)郡域に相当。古代からの霊験の地で熊野三社や那智滝など名勝が多い。※古事記（712）中「此の時熊野の高倉下〈此は人の名〉、一ふりの横刀(たち)を(も)ちて、天つ神の御子の伏したまへる地に到りて献りし時」[二] 三重県南部にある地名。熊野灘に面する。古くは熊野三山の神領地。木材の集散地として知られ、製材業、暖地園芸農業、漁業がさかん。鬼ケ城の奇勝を含む熊野浦、熊野川支流の北山川は吉野熊野国立公園の一部。那智黒を特産。昭和二九年（一九五四）市制。[三] 「くまのさんしゃ（熊野三社）」の略。[四] 京都府の北西端にあった郡。平成一六年（二〇〇四）京丹後市の成立で消滅。〔二十巻本和名抄（934頃）〕[五] 島根県松江市南部の地名。出雲国一の宮熊野神社がある。[2] 〘名〙「くまのずみ（熊野炭）」の略。※雑俳・川柳評万句合‐明和七（1770）義一「かけ鯛をあげて熊野とぶちまける」
