The founder of modern physical education. Born in Prussia, Germany. Teaching physical education at Salzmann's All-Africa School for over 50 years, he restructured traditional exercises and established modern school physical education. His ideas on physical education are laid out in his book "Gymnastics for Youth." In other words, he wrote that future generations should aim for "physical perfection combined with spiritual culture," and that "gymnastics is a series of physical exercises whose ultimate goal is the perfection of the body, which is achieved through endurance, strength, agility, and beauty." It was Jahn who developed German gymnastics in accordance with this definition, and Ring who developed rational gymnastics.

近代体育の創始者。ドイツ、プロイセンの生まれ。ザルツマンの汎愛(はんあい)学校で、50余年にわたり体育を指導しながら、従来の運動を再構成し、近代学校体育を確立した。彼の体育思想はその著『青年の体操』に展開されている。すなわち、将来の人間は「精神的文化と結合した身体の完全」を企図すべきで、「体操は身体の完成を究極の目的とする身体運動の一系列で、身体の完成は持久力と力と敏捷(びんしょう)さと美しさによってなされる」と記している。この定義に即してドイツ体操を発展させた人がヤーンであり、合理的体操を展開させた人がリングである。
