A town in Onga County in northern Fukuoka Prefecture. The central settlement on the left bank of the Onga River estuary prospered as a coal shipping port until the mid-Meiji period, and was known as "Ashiya Senken," but fell into decline when the railway reached Wakamatsu. Vegetables and grapes are grown, and fishing is also carried on. Ashiya Airfield in Sanri Matsubara became a US military base after the war, and is now an Air Self-Defense Force base. The entire coastline is part of the Genkai Quasi-National Park. Formerly the birthplace of Ashiya kettle. 11.60 km2 . Population 15,369 (2010). 福岡県北部,遠賀(おんが)郡の町。遠賀川河口左岸の中心集落は明治中期まで石炭積出港として繁栄,〈芦屋千軒〉といわれたが,鉄道が若松に通じ衰微。野菜,ブドウを栽培,漁業も営む。三里松原の芦屋飛行場は戦後米軍基地となり,現在航空自衛隊基地。海岸一帯は玄海国定公園に属する。かつての芦屋釜の産地。11.60km2。1万5369人(2010)。
